Radio Sailing on Glenmore Reservoir

Welcome to the Calgary Model Sailing Association. We are an enthusiastic and friendly group of people who predominantly race IOM sailboats up to three times a week from May to October. In the winter some of us also sail radio ice yachts.

Our home base is the Glenmore Reservoir in SW Calgary. We have access to two docks, one on the south side of the Reservoir by the Glenmore Sailing Club and the Glenmore Sailing School, and a second dock on the north side by the entrance to Heritage Park. Both docks have excellent access to parking and washrooms.

We generally meet Friday and Tuesday evenings and Sunday afternoons, May until October.

Our Friday evening meeting place is the south docks and we generally arrive around 5:30 PM to prep boats and set marks, and usually start sailing in earnest by 6:30 PM. We generally sail until we’re tired, or the wind peters out, or it gets dark.

On Sundays we meet at the North docks near Heritage Park around 1:00 PM and start racing around 2:00 PM. On some Sundays we tend to stay a bit longer and can sail up to 4:00pm. Note that some Sunday events are scheduled at a different sailing venues around Calgary. Check the CMSA Facebook page for each weeks location.

Recently we’ve made an agreement to use the pond at Shriners Al Ahzar Centre in NW Calgary. We have installed permanent marks and sail there on Tuesday evenings starting at 5:30.

New this year for the CMSA is The Peanut Butter Cup. This is a cumulative scoring series held once a month from May to October, usually on the second Sunday of each month. We anticipate that many casual sailors will show up for these events as an ongoing points series brings out the competitor in all of us. To be scored in the The Peanut Butter Cup requires an IOM sailboat, but anybody with any radio sailboat (or without a radio sailboat) is welcome to attend.

On September 19th-21st we are pleased to invite you to participate in our third annual September Blender regatta, hosted in conjunction with the Glenmore Sailing Club. This well-attended event features a weekend of excellent racing, good food, and fantastic socializing. Please check out the September Blender 2014 NOR document for detailed information.

We welcome any class of radio sailboat to join us. You can also choose to participate in our racing or not. Throughout the season we enjoy some fun days including poker runs and the like. On the non-Peanut Butter Cup Sundays we plan on sailing at some alternate venues like Chestermere Lake to the east of Calgary and Ghost Lake to the west of Calgary. We also have a camping/sailing trip planned for the first weekend of July to the Waterton Reservoir, about three hours drive south of Calgary.

Our most current info and, at times, strangest discussions can be discovered on the CMSA Facebook page.

Note that you do not need to be a member of Facebook to view our Facebook page. All the discussion and photos are available for viewing by anybody. If you’d like to speak to an actual, real live human being, please contact your CRYA Prairie Region Director.

Thanks for your interest in RC Model sailing on the Prairies.
