Got Wood?
Dec 29th – CRYA member Martin Herbert recently embarked on a project to build a wooden IOM. Here is his build log. As he gets further along in the process, we’ll post any updates that he sends. We look forward to seeing Martin’s craftsmanship on the water. Click for details.

Dec 28th – The ranking system has been revised for 2015. For details, please see the IOM Ranking page.
IOM International Class Association – Voting Results from 2014 AGM
Dec 26th – Thank you to all IOM skippers who replied to my request and voted on the AGM motions in November. All countries have submitted their votes and the results are now published and the details are available on the IOMICA web site. In summary, there were three motions. First, adjust eligibility for Continental Championship Regattas. Second – Clarify that masthead wind indicators may be attached to masthead or back stay. Third – allow leach tell tails to extend beyond the measured edge of the sail. All thee motions pass unanimously. The class rules will be formally updated once ratified by the IRSA.

Beaver Fever NOR
Nov 19th – The Beaver Fever Regatta for IOM class is scheduled for March 28th – 29th, Beaver Lake, Victoria BC. This is a CRYA Western Region ranking event and the first in the 2015 COW CAN AM series. The NOR is now available for download.
Call for Content
Nov 9th –Dear CRYA members. In recent years this website has been redeveloped and the activities have been ramped up. This has been done to better serve you. However, the content for this website doesn’t generate itself, it’s member-generated. Everything you see on these pages here has been developed and submitted by fellow members. So if you want to see some coverage of your regatta, of your class of boats or of anything else in particular, simply write it up and submit it to your CRYA Exec Secretary and it will get posted. Be sure to include photos if appropriate.
IOM Update Newsletter – Fall 2014
Nov 8th – Our good friend Bob Wells from the Seattle Model Yacht Club publishes an IOM newsletter every quarter. This excellent newsletter features information on US and Canadian events, has some terrific interviews, and comprehensive rules discussion from our own John Ball. The Fall 2014 issue (and older issues) is available here.
September Blender Report
Sept 30th – September in Calgary is usually beautiful. The days are warm, the nights are cool and the trees are starting to change colour. It is against this background that the 3rd annual September Blender regatta was held on the waters of Glenmore Reservoir. The event was co-hosted by Calgary Model Sailing Association and Glenmore Sailing Club.
The Blender is a sailing event for International One Metre (IOM) radio sailboats. This year, the scope of the event was expanded to include two full days of racing plus associated lunches, dinners and social gatherings. Read more including photos and results

New IOMICA Rulings
Sept 11th – The UK submitted a request for a Technical Committee interpretation of the IOM Class Rule relating to the use of a restraining loop or elastic restraint on the Jib Boom topping lift. Several variations were shown. The restraint is used to prevent the topping lift from catching on the spreaders. The Questions and the official reply can be seen at http://iomclass.org/doc-files/Technical/IOM%20CR%20Interpretations/Interpretation%202014-IOM-3.pdf Basically, the answer is that various kinds of restraint in common use are class legal, BUT you cannot use more than one method at a time.. Aug 8th – There are two amendments to the IOM rules regarding telltales and wind vanes. They both seem to make legal items that were commonly in use although technically not allowed under the previous rules. September Blender Registration Open
June 10th – Registration is now open for the 3rd annual September Blender regatta in Calgary, September 19th to 21st. The Blender is an IOM regatta and is limited to 20 spaces. See NOR. Registration is via Glenmore Sailing Club website.
IOM Western Canadian Championships
June 9th – The Salt Spring Island Sailing Club (SISC) was again the host for the 2014 edition of the Western Canadian IOM Championship regatta. The CRYA and all the competitors are very grateful to the executive and members of SISC for allowing us to use this fantastic racing venue. Four sailors from California and nine from Washington State joined fifteen BC skippers to make up a great twenty eight boat fleet, allowing a two heat format and lots of racing. Twenty six races were completed allowing four discards. When the dust settled, Jess Atkinson (CA) sailing an Ian Vickers V8 emerged as Champion over Julian Laffin (BC) sailing a Graham Herbert Jive. Going into the last race, Jess and Julian were tied on points and their finish positions in the last race decided the overall champion – what a way to finish! More report, results and photos…
