Personal Sail Numbers (updated 15-May-2020)

The Association offers the option of Personal Sail Numbers (PSN) to members. Note however that you do not need a PSN, as the last two digits of your hull registration number  (HRN) is normally what you display on your sails.

Rules that control identification on sails for RC Yachts may be found in the Racing Rules of Sailing – Appendix E8 and Appendix G. These rules apply to recognized International radio yacht classes and may also be used for other classes recognized by the CRYA. Note that these rules state that the displayed Sail Number is the last two digits of your Hull Registration Number, so any PSN will also be only two digits.

A PSN is assigned to the CRYA member, not the boat. A member can have only 1 PSN. A member may use their PSN for any class of boat which they sail.

It should be noted that having a PSN does not bestow any privileges in the event of a sail number clash at events.  The race committee have the responsibility to resolve any sail number conflicts as found in RRS E8/G1.3(b). Normally number conflicts are resolved on a first come basis.

Personal Sail Number Process

Members must have a boat registered (Hull Registration Number) before they can apply for a PSN.

A member wishing a Personal Sail Number may apply to the Registrar via this form CRYA web site or, by email or letter.

There shall be a pool of one hundred PSN numbers available, 00 to 99 in each Region and a member may choose any un-allocated number from the available pool within their Region.

The fee shall be set from time to time by the CRYA Board. The current fee is $25 and is valid for the lifetime of the member.

A PSN certificate will be issued on payment of the PSN fee. Ownership of the PSN number is not granted. A PSN certificate is only valid if accompanied by a current Association membership certificate.

If a member sells a boat displaying their PSN on the sails, they must remove the PSN from all sets of sails before sending the boat to the buyer.

A member who allows membership of the CRYA lapse for a period of three months, shall lose the right to use their PSN. The PSN will then be returned to the pool of available numbers and may be reallocated immediately thereafter. If a lapsed member rejoins the CRYA, and the PSN is still available, they may request that it be reallocated to them with no additional fee. However if that number has been allocated to another member, then the returning member, if they wish to have a PSN must start over and request a new PSN from the available pool and pay the PSN fee. In this case, the expired PSN certificate must be destroyed.
